Covenant, or perhaps the oracle refers to the position of the king’s palace relative to the temple. In any case, the Psalm expresses the view that the king’s rule is an extension of that of God himself. This Psalm also ascribes a priestly role to the king, also by solemn divine decree: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’ ” (Ps. 110:4).
